On November 20, 2015, The Empire Life Insurance Company was the victim of an email phishing incident in which an unauthorized source gained temporary access to 10 internal email accounts. Phishing is an increasingly sophisticated illegal tactic used to trick people into providing account information such as usernames and passwords by impersonating a trustworthy individual or organization in electronic communications.

Empire Life discovered the incident and contained it within one hour of its occurrence. Upon discovery of the incident, we began an investigation and notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. Our investigation is ongoing and we have been keeping the Privacy Commissioner updated on our progress. We have also notified the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

We are not aware of customer personal information being used inappropriately as a result of this incident. However, it is possible that customer information in these email accounts may have been viewed by an unauthorized third party.

It is not our practice to collect credit card information through email. However, it is always a good practice to review your credit card statements and, if you ever suspect any fraudulent use of your credit card, please call your credit card provider immediately. To learn more about what you can do to protect yourself, you may also wish to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or the Federal Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Beware of Phishing!

Be aware of scam campaigns (known as “phishing”) targeting current and former customers, including unsolicited phone calls or emails that appear to offer you identity theft protection or credit monitoring. These communications appear as if they have come from Empire Life, and are intended to capture personal information.

Empire Life will not be initiating contact with any customers by mail, email or phone regarding this issue. If you receive a communication of any nature please report it to our Customer Hotline by calling 1-800-982-1744 (English) or 1-844-319-9656 (French).

As a general rule, never give out personal information on the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet unless you’ve initiated the contact and are sure you know who you’re dealing with. If you receive an email with a link, confirm that you are dealing with a legitimate organization before sharing any personal information. One way to do this is to check an organization’s website by typing its URL in the address line, rather than cutting and pasting it.
